Process For Obtaining a Visa or Entry Permit in Uganda

  1. Prepare and apply. It will be studied by an Immigration Officer. He or she may need additional information. The new required information can be submitted electronically through “Manage your applications”
  2. The decision taken on the application will be sent electronically through the email provided by the applicant. If approved, an approval letter will be sent as an attachment to the email provided. Click on the link to download it.
  3. A travel letter is not permission to enter Uganda therefore, applicants outside Uganda (visa-prone countries) will be required to apply for a visa to enable them to enter Uganda.
  4. Present a valid travel document of not less than 6 months validity to the Immigration officer at the port of entry.

Government Entry Permits and the Corresponding Fees

Class A2 – Government Contractors

Class A2 is Issued to Government Contractors coming to Uganda to provide goods, services, or both to the government. Applicants Should Be Persons on Government Contracts, Including Persons Serving in Government Tertiary Institutions.

What is the duration and fee for Class A2 Permit?

  • 6 Months: Application Fee is $250
  • 12 Months: Application Fee is $500
  • 24 Months: Application Fee is $1,000
  • 36 Months: Application Fee is $1,500
Application Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Visa Class A2 Work Permit – Government Contractors:
  1. Passport (bio-data page) with at least 6 months validity
  2. Recent passport-size photo
  3. Covering letter from the organization (Ministry, Department or Agency)
  4. Copy of the contract with the Government institution

Class B1 – Agriculture

This Is the Work Permit Issued to Applicants Intending to Invest in The Business of Agriculture or Animal Husbandry.

  • 6 Months Application Fee is $1,250
  • 12 months Pre-Payment Fee $1,500 Application Fee $1,000
  • 24 months Pre Payment-Fee $1,500 Application Fee $3,500
  • 36 months Pre Payment-Fee $1,500 Application Fee $6,000

Application Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Permit Class B1 Work Permit – Agriculture:

  1. Recommendation from the Ministry of Agriculture
  2. Passport Copy (Bio data page) with at least 6 months validity
  3. Recent Passport size Photograph
  4. Valid Police clearance from Interpol or home country
  5. Covering letter from company
  6. Copy of the land title
  7. Recommendation letter from LCs or RDC’s office
  8. Work plan / Feasibility study of the project you’re going to undertake.
  9. Current Bank statement (last 3 months)

Classes B2, C2, G3 & E – Investment Facilitation

  • 6 Months Application Fee $400
  • 12 Months Application Fee $400
  • 24 Months Application Fee of $800
  • 36 Months Application Fee $1,200

  1. Copy of Uganda Investment Authority license
  2. Copy of the passport (bio-data page)
  3. Copy of recent passport-size photo
  4. Clearance letter from Interpol or home country
  5. Copy of Income tax clearance
  6. Covering letter from the organization
  7. Income tax clearance of the organization
  8. Required Document of Entry Permit under Investor Facilitation

Class A – Diplomatic Service

Application Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Visa/ Permits Class A (Diplomatic Service)

  1. Passport Copy (Bio data page) with at least 6 months validity
  2. Recent Passport Size Photograph
  3. Covering letter from the Embassy (Diplomatic note)
  4. Recommendation Letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Uganda)

Class D – Business and Trade

Applicants Should Be Persons Intending to Carry on The Business or Trade in Uganda.

  • 6 Months Application Fee $1,250
  • 12 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500, Application Fee $1,000
  • 24 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500, Application Fee $3,500
  • 36 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500, Application Fee $6,000

Application Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Visa Class D (Business and Trade)

  1. Copy of the passport (bio-data page) with at least 6 months validity
  2. Copy of recent passport-size photo
  3. Valid Clearance letter from Interpol or home country
  4. Copy of Valid trading license
  5. Copy of certified Bank statement (last three months)
  6. Copy of Valid income Tax clearance
  7. Current immigration status
  8. Covering letter from the company stating what the company deals in
  9. List of employees in the company indicating nationality and position held.

Class G1 – Missionaries and Volunteer NGO Workers

This work permit is issued to Volunteers, NGO Workers, and Missionaries

  • 6 Months Application Fee $ 250
  • 12 Months Application Fee $ 250
  • 24 Months Application Fee $ 500
  • 36 Months Application Fee $ 750

  1. Certified copy of Qualifications
  2. Copy of recent passport-size photograph
  3. Copy of the passport (bio-data page) with at least 6 months validity

  5. Valid Clearance letter from Interpol or home country
  6. Appointment letter from the organization
  7. Recommendation Letter from NGO Bureau
  8. Current immigration status
  9. List of employees in the organization indicating nationality and position held.

Class C1 – Mining

Applicants Should Be Persons Intending to Invest in The Business of Prospecting for Minerals or Mining in Uganda.

  • 6 Months Application Fee $ 1,250
  • 12 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500, and Application Fee $1,000
  • 24 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500, and Application Fee $3,500
  • 36 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500 Application Fee $6,000

Application Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Visa Class C1 – Mining

  1. Passport (bio-data page) with at least 6 months validity
  2. Recent passport-size photo
  3. Valid Police clearance from Interpol or home country
  4. Copy of Valid mining license issued in Uganda or a prospecting license.
  5. Copy of Uganda Investment Authority (U.I.A) license
  6. Support letter from the Ministry of Energy, Minerals &Natural Resources
  7. Certified proof of shareholding by the applicant
  8. Covering letter from the Organization

Class G2 – Expatriate Employees

Class G2 Work Permit Is Issued to Expatriate Employees Who Is Temporarily Assigned to Work in Uganda.

  • 6 Months Application Fee $1,250
  • 12 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500 Application Fee $1,000
  • 24 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500, and Application Fee $3,500
  • 36 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500, and Application Fee $6,000

Application Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Visa Class G2 (Expatriate Employees)

  1. Recent Passport-size Photograph
  2. Covering letter from the Organization
  3. Valid Clearance letter from Interpol or home country
  4. Copy of the passport (bio-data page) with at least 6 months validity
  5. Appointment letter from the organization
  6. Valid Income Tax clearance of the organization
  7. Certified copy of Qualifications/translation from Makerere University College of Languages
  8. Current immigration status
  9. List of employees in the company indicating nationality and position held.

Class F – Professionals

Applicants Should Be Members of Prescribed Professionals Intending to Practice Such Profession in Uganda.

  • 6 Months Application Fee $1,500
  • 12 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500 Application Fee $1,500
  • 24 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500 Application Fee $4,500
  • 36 Months Pre-payment Fee $1,500 Application Fee $7,500

Application Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Visa Class F (Professionals)

  1. Copy of the passport (bio-data page) with at least 6 months validity
  2. Copy of recent passport-size photograph
  3. Covering letter from the organization
  4. Valid Clearance letter from Interpol or home country
  5. Registration certificate with the relevant professional body in Uganda
  6. Certified proof of shareholding in the company
  7. Current immigration status

Class H -Ordinary Residents

  • 6 months (online payment only – all the online payments may be subjected to a 3% surcharge fee) Application Fee $750
  • 12 months (online payment only – all the online payments may be subjected to a 3% surcharge fee) Application Fee $1,500

Application Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Visa Class H -Ordinary Residents

  1. Copy of the passport (bio-data page) with at least 6 months validity
  2. Valid Clearance letter from Interpol or home country
  3. Current immigration status
  4. Letter of undertaking not to accept any employment paid, unpaid, or engage in income-generating activity.
  5. Covering letter from the applicant
  6. Documentary proof of an assured income of not less than USD36000 per annum
  7. Proof of accommodation in the country e.g., rental agreement or land title
  8. Recent Passport-size Photograph

Work Permit Renewal in Uganda

  • Attach a cover letter from the company.
  • 2 passport size photos
  • Photocopies of the permit in the passport and a copy of the bio-data page of the passport.
  • Bank statement
  • Proof of Ugandans’ trained
  • List of Ugandans employed.

Requirements to Apply for a Certificate of Residence in Uganda

  • 3 passport size photos

Citizenship By Registration in Uganda – Due to Marriage

Steps for Application

Requirements to Apply for Citizenship by Registration in Uganda Due to Marriage:

  1. Recommendation letter and National Identity card of 2 referees (Ugandan by birth of substantial standing)
  2. Valid Certificate of Good Conduct from Interpol (issued within last 6 months)
  3. Current Passport Bio Data Page
  4. Recent Passport size photograph
  5. Medical report of sanity from a certified Doctor
  6. Notarized oath of allegiance (download and re-attach duly signed)
  7. Recommendation letter from LC1, RDC, and DISO (from the area of residence)
  8. Evidence of marriage – certified copy of marriage certificate by URSB (If marriage is contracted outside Uganda should be certified by home country/Embassy)
  9. Support/consent letter from Spouse
  10. Evidence of Spouse Being Ugandan (copy of passport, national ID (for registered spouses attach registration certificate)
  11. Evidence of five years of continuous legal stay in Uganda (copy of entry permit/CR/DP-Spouse)
  12. Proof of profession/occupation
  13. Download and complete Form C (re-attach Duly signed)

Application Fees for Citizenship by Registration in Uganda Due to Marriage

  1. Non-Refundable cost USD 200
  2. Application fee upon approval: USD 3,000 if married to an indigenous Ugandan, USD 5000 if married to a registered Ugandan citizen.

Employment of EAC Nationals Under the EAC Common Market Protocol

Categories of workers allowed to work in Uganda under the EAC Common Market Protocol include Chairmen of companies; Civil engineers; Aircraft and ship controllers and technicians.

  • Applicants should fill out a work permit form and fulfill requirements under the specific category of work permit sought. (Refer to categories above)
  • EAC nationals who obtain work of more than 90 days should apply for a work permit within 15 days from the date of the concluding contract of employment.
  • A special pass should be sought for employment of not more than 90 days.
  • Special passes will be issued to EAC nationals pending the issuance of work permits.
  • Employers should furnish immigration with an annual return of EAC workers in the establishment.
  • EAC workers who change employment should notify immigration within 15 days of a change of employment and should apply for new work permits.
  • If a worker ceases employment, for which a work permit was issued, he/ she must notify immigration within 15 days of cessation and apply for a pass to stay in Uganda or leave the country.
